What Is A Camping Toilet And Why You Need One

Also called a portable toilet or a portable camping toilet, a camping toilet can be super helpful to have with you on an outdoor trip. A camping toilet is designed to let a camper do their business in a portable toilet. While not as nice as a normal toilet with indoor plumbing, a camping toilet can make taking care of business in the great outdoors a lot more comfortable and convenient.

Bringing along your own portable toilet is often more relaxing and feels cleaner than the other options that you typically have when camping. Without a camping toilet, your options are campground facilities or going outside.

While it’s nice to have campground facilities as an option, you usually have to walk a bit from your campsite to get to these restrooms. This can be a challenging or uncomfortable option in the middle of the night or if it’s cold out. Sometimes the provided restroom is only a port-a-potty, so having your portable toilet may smell less and feel cleaner.

Digging a hole or finding a tree can be a challenge for small children, people with limited mobility, or if the weather conditions aren’t ideal. It’s also harder to maintain a comfortable and sanitary condition when you pop a squat to poop.

A camping toilet solves so many of these issues. It provides a clean, convenient option to answer the call of nature when camping out in nature. It makes those late night bathroom breaks so much easier.

Can You Poop In a Portable Camping Toilet?

Short answer: Yes.

For the bucket or chair style camping toilets, you can line the toilet with a disposable bag. Some waste kit bags already contain a kitty-liter-ish material that helps to absorb liquid waste and reduce the odor from solid waste. You can also purchase “poo powder,” a chemical that helps to break down poop and reduce odor.

For the fancier camping toilets that have a flushing mechanism, these are designed with number two in mind. You can fill the bowl with a small amount of water and line the toilet bowl with a little toilet paper before going to make it easier to flush down. Most camping toilets perform better if you use chemicals in the waste tank to help break down toilet paper and stool.

Can you empty a chemical toilet into a normal toilet?

While some people do opt to empty their chemical toilet into a normal toilet at home, it’s really not a good idea.

And in many cases, you probably don’t want to.

The waste in a chemical toilet is referred to as “black water,” and it technically should not be disposed of in your home sewer system, which is not designed for this.

Please read the details accompanying the camping toilet chemicals that you purchased. Some of them turn liquid waste into a solid material; this is lighter to carry but usually is not good to dump in a normal toilet at your house.

Often, there is too much toilet paper and waste products to fit down the drain in your toilet at home. It has the potential to clog the pipes.

And just in case anything spills, this is a job that you’d rather do outside at a designated campsite or RV dumping station. They also usually provide hoses to wash down the inside of the waste tank, also called a cassette.

You may be able to empty the chemical toilet directly into a home septic tank, but please proceed with caution and consider consulting a licensed professional before attempting this.

If you opt not to use chemicals in your camping toilet, you might be able to dump it in batches down your regular toilet. However, the odor is likely to be overwhelming, and please be careful not to clog any pipes.

Do camping toilets smell?

It depends on the the type of camping toilet that you get (see Different Types of Camping Toilets below).

Bucket and chair style portable toilets use a disposable waste bag. Often these bags come lined with material to help absorb the odor from excrement. Additional products, like poo powder, can be purchased to put in the waste bags and reduce odors. You can also place the waste bag in a large ziplock bag to further reduce odors before disposal.

Typically, the pump style camping toilets listed above do not smell. They have a separate, sealed waste tank to contain things, and you can also use chemicals to further reduce the smell. Most models do not have an odor for up to 4-5 days of use.

How does a camping toilet work?

The mechanism of each camping toilet depends on the style of camping toilet that you buy (see below).

How to Clean a Chemical Toilet

For a bucket or collapsible camping toilet, you simply remove the waste bag and dispose of it in an appropriate area. Many campgrounds, RV sites, and even gas stations offer waste dumping stations.

For flushable camping toilets, the waste material needs to be disposed of properly at a dumping station. The waste tank should be opened, and then pour the waste material into the appropriate receptacle at the dumping station. Most dumping stations have a hose available, and you should use that hose to rinse and clean out the inside of the waste tank.

The Different Types of Camping Toilets

There are three main categories for camping toilets:

  • Bucket Toilet
  • Collapsible Toilet
  • Flushable Toilet

Bucket Toilets

These camping toilets have a main bucket that you can place a bag inside to collect waste.

The benefits are that these tend to be lightweight, have no moving parts that could break, and these tend to be budget friendly. They’re also easy to clean because they use a disposal waste bag.

The cons are that they are more rustic, may smell more, and you have individual bags of excrement that need to be removed. However, you can use chemical products to reduce odors and help to solidify pee to make it easier for disposal.

Collapsible Toilets

A collapsible toilet, like the name suggests, can be folded up for easy storage when not in use. They are a toilet seat mounted on a foldable metal, and it’s used together with a disposable waste bag.

The benefits of a collapsible toilet include how easy they are to store and use. They hardly take up any space at your campsite, and they usually provide a very stable base when in use. They are also easy to clean, as clean up mainly consists of disposing of a waste bag after use.

The drawbacks include possible odor and the need to dispose of bags of waste.

Flushable Toilets

Flushable toilets are the premium version of camping toilets. As the name describes, these portable toilets have a flushing mechanism.

These camping toilets are easy to use, feel more like a real residential toilet, and often are the least likely to smell bad. The waste tank usually has a secure seal to lock unpleasant odor and waste inside. They also can go several days (usually 50-70 flushes) before they need to be emptied.

The downsides to flushable toilets are the maintenance. They often require more time to clean than the other two types of camping toilets, and they are heavier to carry, both due to the weight of the unit and once it’s been used extensively. They do have a pump to allow for the flushing action, and it could break down over time.

Other Types of Outdoor Facilities

While not technically considered camping toilets, these other devices for finding relief in the wilderness should be mentioned (just in case they’re a better fit for your next outdoor adventure):

  • A Jar- Using a jar or bottle to relieve yourself of number one has been an option for a long time. There are even funnels or female urinal funnels available now for women.
  • Sanitation Trowel (aka the Poop Shovel)- This can be used to dig a hole deep enough to do your business, and then you use the trowel to cover everything up when you’re done.

While the options listed about are possible ways to use the restroom when camping, my personal preference is one of the camping toilets listed above.

7 Benefits Of Using A Camping Toilet

Camping toilets can help to make you feel more at home when you’re away from home. Here’s some awesome benefits of using a camping toilet:

  1. Comfort- Let’s be honest– being constipated is super uncomfortable; so is squatting to use the restroom. A camping toilet allows you to sit down, rest comfortably, and focus on the business at hand when it’s time to go.
  2. Family-friendly. A camping toilet makes it easier for little kids, people with limited mobility, and (let’s be honest) most women to feel more comfortable using the restroom while out camping. It can make the whole trip easier for everyone when people feel comfortable going to the bathroom instead of dreading it.
  3. Perfect for nighttime. In the middle of the night, you don’t want to trudge through the dark and cold to go to a creepy campground bathroom. A portable toilet is right by your campsite, ready when you need it.
  4. Cleanliness. You know exactly how clean your camping toilet is… because you know the person cleaning it. It’s also more sanitary since you’re not sharing it with everyone and their mother at the campground.
  5. Proper Waste Disposal. Using a camping toilet lets you dispose of human waste in an appropriate manner, which makes it better for the local habitat and superior to using a sanitation trowel and trying to bury excrement.
  6. Control of Odors. Each type of camping toilet has options to reduce the potential odors that can come from camping toilet use.
  7. Conserves Water. Camping toilets use much less water with every flush compared to conventional residential toilets.

Things To Consider For A Good Camping Toilet Experience

When you’re ready to buy your camping toilet, you need to keep in mind the following things.

Please consider which type of camping toilet suits your needs best. If camping with small children, the stable base and easy flushing mechanism of a flushable toilet would probably be best. If you’re backpacking deep into the woods, every ounce of weight in your pack counts, and a collapsible toilet is probably best for you. If you want a camping toilet that has no moving parts that could possibly break, then a bucket toilet is perfect for you.

Other things to consider when buying a camping toilet:

  • Does it need specialized toilet paper? Most work best with RV toilet paper or single ply TP.
  • Does it need chemicals?
  • Which waste bags fit this model?
  • Waste can be disposed of easily on your journey

There are additional accessories that can make using a camping toilet even easier:

  • Use a pop up utility tent for extra privacy and to create your own mini bathroom
  • Stock up on RV toilet paper
  • Use “poo powder” to make it easier to store waste

Also, please run water through your camping toilet system before using it for the first time to be sure that the seals are water (and hopefully smell) tight.

A camping toilet can be a great investment to truly help you to relax on your next camping adventure. It’s an easy way to answer the call of nature while in nature.

We like the Camco (41541) Portable Travel Toilet for its size, stability, and ease of use. We also recommend getting a designated pop up utility tent to create an easy, private restroom on the go.

To make your next camping trip more comfortable for everyone, consider getting a portable camping toilet.
